So you just arrived here from twitter and it's quiet. Real quiet. That's because there's no algorithm here designed to drive engagement(which equals profit).

Here, you are the algorithm. It's up to you to find and follow people that are interesting to you. You can also see who they follow and who else follows them, as you build it up, it gets more interesting.

Also, if you find people you don't like or entire instances you don't like, you can mute or block them. You are in control.

Lots to take in, huh? You’ll get the hang of it! :)

There are lots of blind people on Mastodon. Actively using it. Some tips:

1. Set a display name but don’t add emojis. Even if some screen readers can read it, is it a nice experience? We take milliseconds to skim emojis, screen readers don’t.
2. When posting images, do add alt text. You’re already familiar with this from Twitter. 😊
3. Use CamelCase for hashtags.

listen, i'm glad everyone is here/back but platform metacommentary alone won't be enough to make this stick. you need to start posting inane nonsense

what did you eat today. did you see any cool bugs

New people, welcome to Mastodon and the Fediverse!

Here's how to get started:

1. Find some people to follow over on @FediFollows, and through Trunk (communitywiki.org/trunk)

2. Find out your Mastodon/Fediverse address so you can share it with friends (mstdn.social/@feditips/1072482)

3. Invite people to join you on here by telling them to go to joinmastodon.org and click on "Get Started". It doesn't matter if they join a different server because the servers talk to each other (here's a bit more of an explanation mstdn.social/@feditips/1070214)

4. Find out what the Fediverse is (mstdn.social/@feditips/1070440)

5. Find out why Mastodon being on so many different servers/instances is a really good thing (mstdn.social/@feditips/1070837)

6. If you see anything nasty, you can report it to your friendly server admin (mstdn.social/@feditips/1065401)

7. You can (sort of) verify your account if you own a website (mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741)

If you have any questions, @ me or DM me!

Fedi is the most strange thing in the world.

On normal social media, you write a message and people just ignore it forever.

Here, you write a message, it stays ignored for 1 or 2 years, and then all of a sudden, for no reason, with no explanation, someone finds it somehow, boosts it, and it gets 200 likes and 120 boosts.

What the fuck.

I'm sure someone will boost this message in 2021 or 2022.

A reminder that virtually all Mastodon hosts are volunteer operations. The fediverse isn't advertising supported. 💸

Most instances have ways of accepting donations.

Find out yours and use them. Contact your instance admin or check your instance's front page.

(Annoyingly, you may have to log out to see the front page.)

:boost_ok: :ablobcatwave: Please boost this post if you would like the EFF to join the fediverse. :ablobcatbongo:

In a survey the EFF sent me, I suggested they create an account on the fediverse, so they can reach more supporters and support innovative free software that promotes interoperability among platforms, something they've advocated for in the past, too.

If you can boost this post, maybe I'll be able to show them that there are quite a few users who would like them here!

The EFF is the infamous nonprofit organisation that fights for privacy, government transparency, and digital freedom. Their fight is very important, and the EFF is very special to me. https://www.eff.org/about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation

You can see some of their work here https://www.eff.org/work

In the meantime, you can follow @eff, which is an unofficial mirror of their Twitter.

But it’ll go off on a hot summer night leaving you wondering whether you’ll need to change clothes.

Working as a developer doesn't mean you're smashing keys on your keyboard for 8 hours straight.

It's thinking, learning, experimenting, communicating, reading, trying, exploring, scribbling, and probably a dozen other things. Then, for just a couple minutes each day, you actually type some code.

Did you know you can contribute to elementary OS, whether or not you can code? There are so many ways you can get involved whether it's funding, support, or development. Learn more about all the different ways here:

My upcoming Habitica client now has task status colours, task notes, streaks and due dates.

Under the hood, those add, edit and delete buttons now actually work. 😉

Looking forward to presenting the inaugural address on #web0 next week at a series of talks at the University of Southampton Department of Art & Media Technology aimed, in part, to shape department policy and organised by department head @adamprocter

Fine, desktop Linux market share is low. I know.

You know what’s way lower? Like so low that it’s a rounding error?

Percentage of people who _intentionally_ replace another OS with Windows.
