Finally finished this... even though I just painted the colours I saw rather than the buildings, it still took quite a bit longer than I intended. But from a distance I think it looks OK.

Probably about 7 hours work.

Remember, Amazon also bought their way into:

• Goodreads
• Audible
• ComiXology
• IMDb
• Twitch
• MGM studios
• Whole Foods

…and a dozen other companies you’ve never heard of.

Why do we let one single company own so much of the tech, content, and shopping world?

Amazon has bought:
• Blink cameras
• Ring home security
• Eero Wi-Fi
• iRobot Roomba

They tried to coerce Ecobee into handing over private data and when they refused, Amazon retaliated by creating a competing smart thermostat.

Still figuring out Mastodon. Did the rookie mistake of joining a general server a couple of days ago, now migrating here for the community and local feed. 😬

Here are some studies trying to capture that effortless clouds look!

I wish I didn’t have to write this in documentation in 2022, but last I checked with people smarter than me, it sounded like, “that’s the best we can do, because Linux kernel.”

In this week's #Linux and #opensource news video, we have details about Google's own Linux distro for desktops (everyone has one, it seems), and @AsahiLinux@twitter.com running on M2 macs, and adding GPU support for M1 (all still experimental of course):

If you're on the Fediverse and you want to host code for libre software and other collaborative projects, you might want to check out @gitea:

It's free, open source and it's currently in process of adding Fediverse compatibility through ActivityPub, the same standard that Mastodon etc use to communicate with each other.

You can see some of the Gitea instances that already have experimental Fediverse connections listed at fedidb.org/software/gitea

If you're just looking for a Gitea instance to join, there's @codeberg at codeberg.org

To see the current state of federated forges, have a look at the @forgefriends blog post at forgefriends.org/blog/2022/06/

COVID is a mass disabling event, for cognitive disabilities, too. It can be so hard not being able to think or do anything. But that doesn’t lessen your value. It just means that you need help, either literally getting things done or habits that help you do so.

"GitLab plans to automatically delete projects if they've been inactive for a year and are owned by users of its free tier." says The Register.

"GitLab is aware of the potential for angry opposition to the plan, and will therefore give users weeks or months of warning before deleting their work. A single comment, commit, or new issue posted to a project during a 12-month period will be sufficient to keep the project alive."

(This is not the place to vent your feelings pro or con about this policy. I'm sure gitlab has official forums or whatever for that)

Watching Tobias’s talk on post-collapse computing… somewhat depressing stuff but also a bit of a kick in the pants to consider this crisis.

This is probably not happening anytime soon for technical reasons (i.e. it'd probably be in an app instead of a shell feature), but wouldn't this be fun :P

info request, atrocities, computer ethics

I'm trying to find out about the atrocities that computers / information technologies have enabled, for a lesson on computer ethics.

I know about IBM and the Holocaust (though further resources on that would be helpful), but what else is there?

Re: the mental health stuff, it's not a topic I've investigated much, and I hope to more.

The latter half talked about social networks, and it touched on some things I have at hand as I reenter .

I want to do everything I can to retain the positive effects of social networks, such as learning new things, sharing things I've learned, and finding friends and community, while minimizing any negative effects of social media as much as possible (as a younger person, I've experienced the downsides a good amount).
